The Municipality of Jagüey Grande is located in the Central South portion of Matanzas, on the Havana-Matanzas plain. Limited by the south with the municipality Ciénaga de Zapata, by the East with Calimete. Colon by the Northeast, Perico and Jovellanos by the north and by the East Pedro Betancourt and Unión de Reyes, has an extension of 881.86 km. It has a population of 60,438 inhabitants with 5 population settlements and 6 popular councils. There is one of the richest aquifer reserves in the country calculated in 900 Mts3 of water. The average temperature is 240 C. The natural reserves of construction materials are considerable, with 30 quarries in operation (15 reached their exploitation limit) and none have been rehabilitated.
The State Companies and Budgeted Units occupy approximately 88.0% of the surface of the territory. The State Sector mainly cultivates citrus fruits, making significant contributions to the National Economy, while the non-State sector dedicates large areas to planting bananas and fruit trees. The business structure of the territory is made up of 4 National Companies, 1 Provincial Company, 1 Local Subordination Company, 1 Subsidized Entity, 8 Budgeted Units, 16 Establishments and 9 Directions. 14 CCS and 2 UBPCs, 5 apicultural UBPCs and 1 CPA.
The agricultural structure is the one with the greatest weight in the economy of the territory, since this sector contributes 60.9% of mercantile production. In addition, the citrus activity has the necessary technological levels to guarantee the economic development of the municipality. The Victoria de Girón Citrus Company occupies an area of 34,251.63 ha, of which 25,459.86 ha are planted with citrus, mango, avocado, vegetables and other crops and more than 8,000 ha dedicated to livestock.
Of great importance is the educational system that has as its social objective the comprehensive training of students and for this we have an enrollment of 8,990 students, distributed in 51 centers: 5 nursery schools, 12 urban primary schools, 12 rural primary schools, 1 special school, 7 Secondary of them 3 Mixed Centers, 1 Pre University, 1 office, 3ETP, 1 language, 1 prison and 2 Adults.
Public health in the municipality has 1 Hospital, 3 Polyclinic, 1 Hygiene Center, 1 Home for the Physically Handicapped, 1 Maternal Home, 3 Rehabilitation Room, 2 Grandfather's House (Jagüey and Agramonte), 1 psychopedagogical center, 1 Center Mental Health 55 CMF (35 in Jagüey, 11 in Torriente and 9 Agramonte), 54 of them with doctors and nurses 1 with a Bachelor of Nursing in the Mountain.
The Municipality has 2 Museum, 3 House of Culture, 1 Art Gallery, 3 Libraries, 1 Amphitheater and 1 bookstore.
Sports have: 4 Sports Teams (1 in Agramonte, 1 in Torriente and 2 in Jagüey, 1 EPEF, the shooting chair belongs to the Sports Team "April 19"
The perspective development of the municipality is mainly oriented to the increase in citrus activity, food programs and the expansion of the Citrus Combined. Self-employment, non-agricultural cooperatives and leasing and the production of construction materials.
